It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Plain of Jars Conservation Workshop, organized in collaboration with the Department of Heritage in the Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICT), is underway in Phonsavan, Xiengkhouang Province, Lao PDR.
We were honored to be joined for the opening ceremony by Mr. Samlanh Luangaphay, Deputy Director General of the MICT's Department of Heritage, and Mr. Khamphet Phonmaduangkaysone, Director General of the MICT in Xiengkhouang Province. Mr. Phakhanxay Sikhanxay, Head of the Division of Monuments and Sites in the MICT's Department of Heritage, has been instrumental in helping to organize the workshop.
This two-week course is training students from the national, provincial, district and village levels in site management and conservation techniques. Leading the instruction are Prof. Thongsa Sayavongkhamdy, who lectured on the subject of Cultural Heritage Management and Legal Frameworks regarding Cultural Heritage; Ms. Lia Genovese, who presented The History and Archaeology of the Plain of Jars; and Mr. Simon Warrack, who is teaching the group about the nature of stone, how it is formed and decays, and conservation approaches in theory and practice.
Great news! This is such a worthy project and I'm delighted to see it moving forward! Good luck to Lia, Simon, Dan, Prof. Thongsa, and all the trainees.
